1. Stoa of Attalos

  • What it is: A grand colonnaded building reconstructed in the 1950s.
  • Purpose: Originally a shopping arcade; now houses the Museum of the Ancient Agora.

2. Temple of Hephaestus

  • Also known as: Hephaisteion or Theseion.
  • Condition: One of the best-preserved ancient Greek temples.
  • Dedicated to: Hephaestus (god of metallurgy) and Athena Ergane (goddess of crafts).
  • Built: Around 449 BCE.

3. The Bouleuterion

  • Function: Council house for the Boule (citizen council of 500).
  • Significance: Political decisions and democratic practices unfolded here.

4. Tholos

  • Structure: Round building with six interior columns.
  • Use: Headquarters of the Prytaneis (executive committee of the Boule).
  • Feature: Officials dined and lived here during their term of office.

5. Altar of the Twelve Gods

  • Function: Religious and civic center point—considered the central milestone of Athens.

6. Odeon of Agrippa

  • Built by: Marcus Agrippa, son-in-law of Augustus.
  • Used for: Musical performances and lectures.
  • Note: Later turned into a gymnasium.
