Ancient Lissos

Ancient Lissos

Ancient Lissos, which may be likened to a lost city, can be reached either by boat from Sougia or on foot; a hike that takes about an hour.

The latter option entails an traversing a beautiful, scenic and relatively passable gorge and climbing a mountainside before a descent to the lovely pebble beach.

Lissos played an important role as a religious centerand it organized the neighboring cities of Hyrtakina, Elyros and Tarra into the Confederacy of Orio.

Today, one can see the ruins of Asclepios for which it was famous, with its magnificent mosaic floors and a hot spring, and many excavated Roman tombs.
