Astypalea

Astypalea

Astypalaia island is ideal for alternative holidays. Due to its secluded location, it has kept a low profile tourist development without losing its original character. Astypalaia holidays will give a deep insight to authentic Greek life. Although it belongs to the Dodecanese island group, the architecture of the island looks more Cycladic. The small town with the white houses and the Venetian Castle on the hilltop offers a picturesque place to explore, especially in the evenings when tourists leave the beaches and head to the town for a night out. Some beaches around the island are organized with sunbeds and umbrellas, while others are totally secluded and naturist friendly.

The island of Astypalaia, in Greece, is one of the Greek islands of the Aegean Sea and it belongs to the Dodecanese islands group. Chora, the main village on Astypalaia island, is small but picturesque. Although the island belongs to the Dodecanese complex, it has an intense Cycladic architecture, with white sugar houses, paved streets and traditional windmills. On a hill above Chora, there is a Venetian Castle that used to protect the island in the Medieval times. The other settlements are mostly tourist places with relaxing beaches. The beaches in close distance to Chora are partly organized with sun beds, umbrellas, taverns and accommodation, while a drive around Astypalea island will bring visitors to many totally secluded places, with few things to do. Agios Konstantinos, Pera Yalos and Livadi are among the most frequented beaches. In the evenings, head to Chora for a lounge drink and a romantic walk across the narrow paths. Holidays in Astypalaia is a wonderful experience if you like places off the beaten track.

Chora and the surrounding beaches are the most convenient places to stay during your Astypalaia holidays. Accommodation in Chora mostly consists of traditional studios and self-catering apartments, with view to the sea or the Castle. Some accommodations are also found in the organized beaches of Pera Gialos and Livadia, with charming traditional studios and rooms to rent right by the waterfront.
